Programmable Thermostats
Save energy and stay comfortable
Programmable Thermostats: A Simple Guide
A programmable or smart thermostat is one of the easiest ways to make your heating more comfortable and more efficient.
What Is A Programmable Thermostat?
A programmable thermostat lets you set different temperatures for different times of day, so the heating comes on before you get up, drops while you are out and warms the house again before you get home. Smart thermostats add app control, learning schedules and, in some cases, room-by-room zoning.
How They Help You Save
- Heat your home only when you need it
- Avoid heating an empty house while you are at work
- Turning down by just one degree can make a noticeable difference to bills
- Smart models can adjust automatically to the weather and your routine
Choosing The Right Model
The best choice depends on your boiler or heat pump, how your home is used and whether you want app control. Popular options include Hive, Nest, Tado and boiler-brand controls from Worcester Bosch and Vaillant. Some boilers work best with their own controls, which can also improve efficiency.
Setting It Up
For most homes we suggest around 18 to 21°C when you are in, a lower setback temperature overnight and while you are out, and heating that comes on 20 to 30 minutes before you need it. Thermostatic radiator valves let you fine-tune individual rooms.
